PROGRAM SCHEDULE

Workshop 1 - Ableism in the Workplace by Alyson Seale, M. Ed.

Time: 1pm to 2pm

About the workshop: 

We will be looking at a variety of ways people with disabilities have been viewed, and how view changes how we ask questions and establish supports. Ableism is entrenched in our society to the degree that we often don’t even notice. Together we will explore able privilege, ableism in society and brainstorm actions we can use today to move toward mitigating ableism in our practice and beyond.

About the presenter: 

Alyson Seale is currently an Associate Professor at the University of the Fraser Valley instructing in the Workplace TASK program, a pre-employment program for adults with disabilities. This has been her passion since 2004. She has worked with people with a wide variety of disabilities, including advising in a post-secondary Disability Resource Center responsible for providing supports for students with disabilities through their university studies, instructing Community Support students as they studied to become educational assistants and community support workers, and 10 years as an ASL/English Sign Language Interpreter. She has taught for the departments of Upgrading and University Preparation, the School of Social Work and Adult Education. Alyson is currently pursuing her doctoral degree at the University of British Columbia in the Faculty of Educational Studies, Leadership and Policy Development with her research focus on the experiences of employees with intellectual disabilities in the workplace.

Workshop 2 - Learn about Vancouver Public Library Skilled Immigrant InfoCentre by Either Heidi Henkenhaf or Mark MacKichan

Time:  2pm to 3pm

About the workshop:

The Vancouver Public Library (VPL) Skilled Immigrant InfoCentre (SIIC) will present on the library and web resources available to help you help your clients. The SIIC resources are for everyone who is looking for employment, exploring careers, or thinking about starting a small business.

We have 158 guides that provide information about industries and careers, and 32 guides that answer the most frequently-asked employment and small business questions. VPL provides access to databases your clients can use to research people, companies, careers, and industries.

Come and learn about the resources available to help make your job easier and your clients more successful!

Workshop 3 - What Do You Really Value? Learn What Motivates Self and Others! by Ken Keis

Time: 3pm - 4.30 pm
