Work Experience Coordinator - Women@Work

Women@Work focuses on empowering young women (ages 15-30) to gain skills and experience in the tourism industry. This is achieved through a series of structured Group-based Employability Skills (GBES), a three month work experience in the tourism industry, and ongoing support and guidance from dedicated Work Coaches and a Work Experience Coordinator.

Under the direction of the Women@Work, Program Manager and with the support of the Work Coach, the Work Experience Coordinator arranges paid work experience opportunities for participants within the tourism industry. The purpose of the work experience is to increase participant employability through enhanced confidence, improved work tolerance, exposure to work, and skills development.

 

The Work Experience Coordinator also provides support to participants on the worksite and is the primary point of contact for the employer.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Works collaboratively with the Work Coach in understanding the participant’s strengths, needs and occupational goals and in implementing suitable strategies for job retention.
  • Develops and supports sustainable competitive employment opportunities based on participant’s work experience, skill sets, and employment goals.
  • Reaches out to those employers who expressed interest in hiring participants from the Women@Work program as well as identifies potential employers to generate additional work experience opportunities.  
  • Facilitates the Work Experience Preparation component of the Group-Based Employability Skills (GBES) to groups of participants.
  • Regularly communicates with the Work Coach regarding how the work experience is progressing and works collaboratively to ensure all stakeholders’ needs are met.
  • Communicates expectations of all stakeholders (employer, supervisor, and youth), as well as addressing any challenges or concerns that arise on the job. The Work Experience Coordinator is the primary point of contact for the employer.
  • Responsible for engaging with employers to secure placements, and setting up a formal orientation session for the participant (in instances where the employer does not already have one in place).
  • Performs Follow Up duties including staying in contact with participants post work experience and providing support to those participants who did not achieve employment or return to school immediately following work experience (e.g. interview preparation, support with job applications, labour market information and marketing techniques).
  • Networks with employers to build relationships and generate leads. Maintains an up-to-date contacts database of employers.
  • Manages relationships with employers and educates regarding HR issues and the benefits of working with specialized populations.
  • Participates in all Women@Work program related meetings.
  • Enters all program notes and participant support activities into appropriate database.
  • Communicates with the Work Coach on an as needed and frequent basis
  • Attends trade shows and other events to network with employers.
  • Remains current on labour market information and provides reporting to Work Coaches regarding labour market activity/events (on an as needed basis).
  • Achieves targets and reports them to Women@Work Program Manager.

QUALIFICATIONS

1. Minimum Qualifications:

  • At least two (2) years’ experience working with participants with barriers to employment.
  • Several years of experience (2-4) with successful job development or participant placement.
  • Valid Driver’s License and access to reliable vehicle

Education: 

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience in a client services/human resources setting.
  • Certified Career Development Practitioner (CCDP), RCSS or Registered Rehabilitation Professional (RRP) designation or eligible for one of these designations.

Memberships & Associations: 

  • Membership in either the BC Career Association (BCCDA) or the Vocational Rehabilitation Association of Canada (VRA) preferred.

  • Strong understanding of labour market and employer needs, especially within the tourism industry.

  • Strong facilitation skills and experience adapting to different learning styles.
  • Ability to motivate individuals to make their own decisions.
  • Able to work with diverse groups, including youth, persons with disabilities, recent immigrants and refugees.
  • Able to work independently with minimal supervision, as well as in a team.
  • Flexible and creative individual, willing to travel to multiple locations.
  • Takes initiative.

Desirable Skills

  • Experience with Wage Subsidy
  • Experience helping youth (ages 15-30) overcome barriers to employment. 
  • Excellent receptive, oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent judgement.
  • Strong time management and organizational skills.
  • A team player who can work effectively with participants, other staff members, community agencies, families, and the Ministry.
  • Ability to remain objective and maintain boundaries.
  • Secondary language is an asset

This is a temporary position working 35 hours a week until January 17, 2020 with the possibility for extension.
