Dr. Reeves’ career developed on the basis of chance happenings, repeated failure, the willingness to take risks and the acceptance and provision of mentoring. With twenty-five years in career development services at multiple Canadian and US universities, Christine Sjolander brings a range of individual and group career coaching techniques and a creative and positive attitude to her work. Her professional experience also includes HR/recruiting experience with technology companies in the United States. She currently operates her own consulting practice, Career Drivers. Christine holds BBA, MS in Engineering and a Doctorate of Education with research related to career development from SFU.

About the workshop:

We may hear about the words, but what does being queer, two-spirit, transgender, gender diverse or non-binary mean and how does it impact our clients in choosing careers, applying for work, and securing employment? We practitioners try to keep our biases in check, but at the same time may feel uncomfortable using forever-evolving LGBTIQ2 terminology. This workshop aims to provide a deeper understanding for working with gender diverse clients, leading to more confidence and effectiveness.

About the presenter:

Sean Brown has worked in employment services since 2001, after finding his calling as a client in a Career Exploration workshop. Sean came out as transgender in 2003, making the transition from female to male while working full-time. In 2005, Sean recreated himself as part-time Decluttering Coach, while continuing to work full time at another job search centre. Sean is currently an Employment Services Advisor who facilitates workshops on supporting queer and gender diverse clients.

Seanna Brown has been a Career Practitioner for over 30 years. Seanna is trained as a Trauma Therapist. These days Seanna works in Private Practice in Vancouver. Seanna also coordinates Continuing Education for Douglas College Faculty of Child, Family and Community Studies.

"Getting Back to Work: Supporting workers with barriers in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside" - AUSTIN LUI

About the workshop:

Austin will host a panel discussion around best practices and key insights around supporting people facing complex challenges reintegrating back into the labour force. Eastside Works (a new employment hub in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside), in partnership with the City of Vancouver and the Parks Board, hired 20 community members to work as community stewards for various parks in the neighbourhood.
This Park Stewardship Program highlights the value of community members in helping facilitating a more harmonious park environment, and how supportive employment can help build capacity for those trying to re-enter the traditional labour market.By the end of the session, participants will have a better understanding of the various challenges behind supportive employment, and some best practices around how to manage a supportive employment program. We will discuss issues such as: How do you best support people facing complex barriers? How do you have tough conversations with employees? When are you enabling vs. when are you compassionate? How do you set healthy and positive boundaries?

About the presenter:

Austin Lui is the Supervisor at Eastside Works, a new employment hub in the heart of the Downtown Eastside (DTES) of Vancouver. He graduated from UBC’s Masters in Community and Regional Planning and has been working in community development for over 5 years. Eastside Works connects individuals facing barriers with suitable opportunities that fit their needs and lifestyle. Eastside Works is a 3-year pilot project that uses a human-centred approach in exploring innovative and sustainable models to support those looking for work that do not fit into the traditional labour market.
